brooklyn fever

I blame Brooklyn for my affinity for mustaches. I wanted one of those finger mustache tattoos back in ’05 but never committed. I thought I had convinced my brother to get one with me one night, but turns out he was just teasing me. I even went to see a mustache competition this winter in SF coordinated by Mustaches For Kids, a volunteer-run organization started in LA in ’99 to do good and have fun by growing Mustaches for children’s charities.

During the four-week Growing Season between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Growers sprout sweet, sweet Mustaches, and solicit donations from friends, family, co-workers, and people in the community. Kind of like getting pledges to run a marathon. Without the exertion, cramping, or dehydration. Call it a facial hair marathon.

At the end, each MfK chapter hosts a Mustache Competition, which is a cross between a beauty pageant, dog show, and police line up. During the Competition, Growers, often in Mustache-enhancing costumes, are put through a test of mind, body, and Mustache and allow their facial hair to be evaluated by an independent panel of judges, and one Mustache is declared to be the “Sweetest.”

The winner was chappy (lower right, he was an old-school boxer), to his left is Mustache Sally during the ‘strong man competition’, and yes she/he is lifting a stuffed mustache with his/her mustache.

Anyway, this isn’t even the point. The point was, I just caught a few images of Matt Rainwaters‘ trip to the Beard and Mustache Championships in Anchorage Alaska! and OMIGOD!
Happy Friday blog readers!
