design, straight through the heart

POSTER FRIDAY// ghin

December 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

It’s here—the last Friday of 2009. So, fittingly, Poster Friday is a calendar:

And a very pretty one at that.

Designed by Ghin, a london based creative, who said:

I decided to lay out the calendar on a single page, making it possible to view the whole year at a glance. Thus enabling the viewer to start making new associations between events and time in general. A lunar calendar is integrated into the layout making it easy to see full and new moons.

Sweet. Not only can I have pretty and functional wall art, but I can be wary of ware wolves at the same time!

You can purchase the calendar here (£20 in the EU, £25 anywhere else.)
Ghin also designed an interfaith edition that includes Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, Christian, Jewish, Rastafarian, Chinese and Sikh holy days.

bits and pieces

December 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I saw these on Design*Sponge recently and fell hopelessly head over heels for a few of the details. They are all from a job by Jessica Helgerson, an interior designer based out of Portland, OR.

Thia lamp, by furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue, is absolutely beautiful. And those knitted seats by Christien Meindertsma? Awesome; They’re like the bean bag chair went to rehab and became a respectable member of society.

I’m a sucker for modern chandeliers. Sadly it’s custom, but I know someone is making something similar, because I swear I’ve seen something like it. (Anyone have any leads on this?)

More lights! These are by Niche Modern.

Again, loving the lighting, but don’t know what it is. Also, LOVE the paint color, it just looks like the NorthWest.

whiskey social.

December 18, 2009 · 1 Comment

According to teroforma, These Whiskey Stones are ideal for chilling your favorite spirit without diluting its flavor—just add three chilled stones, let stand for 5 minutes and enjoy.

They are milled in Vermont by the oldest soapstone workshop in the US.

Whiskey has become part of my holiday tradition… I know how that sounds, but last year my Dad resurrected an old whiskey sour recipe from his youth and it was a hit! Sadly (or happily) my Christmas shopping is done so these won’t be making the cut, but I love the idea of them. Plus, I really hate ice trays.

(I know it’s not a poster. Hopefully I’ll get to that later!)

the future of magazines…

December 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Warning… I think this blog may deserve a soapbox.

Recently Sports Illustrated released a video about the future of magazines. It involved what one can only imagine is the not yet released “Apple Tablet.” Yesterday, a new video was released by Bonnier Research & Design with design partners BERG. Bonnier is the publisher of Popular Science. At first I just thought everyone was jumping on-board and in the next few weeks we’d be inundated with video’s of the future of everything from The Onion to Mother Jones. Then I watched the video:
Vimeo won’t let me post it but here is a link, followed by arbitrary images:

Matt Webb, of BERG, talks a little about magazines, then they explore functionality and moving print to web.

… Hopefully you watched the video; the SI one as well.

What makes this video interesting to me is that it begins to pose the question, where will design be situated in digital magazines (or at least that’s where my mind went with it.) Sure, we’re all imagining the Apple Tablet will move mountains. But the reality of things is that we don’t know what will be possible. Functionality is a HUGE issue. This isn’t just programming magazines, at least it shouldn’t be, it is reinventing the way that magazines communicate. The digital reader and the reader are different entities… Publishing is about to get a huge facelift, and if programming is valued above design we (designers) are looking at an industry where design is relegated to nothing but production.

… At least that was my take on it.  Not sure what happened, but all my optimism of last week’s SI video was replaced by an overwhelming 1984-esque fear, when I really started to think about the possible impacts this can have on design.

Fun reader fact: I take the future of print very seriously; The closest I ever been to having a ligament bar fight was actually over this topic… I think the day that Sassy magazine closed it’s doors?
Yeah, kind of embarrassing.

I was discussing this (digital readers, not bar fights) with Josh and it seems the video sent him in a completely opposite direction; He’s all sunshine and bunnies on the matter, hoping that publishing may become the one industry where design and programing start to really come together, creating a more transparent interaction—something people want to use, not just have to use.
… This is why I don’t usually paraphrase people, they say something really interesting and eloquent and I turn around and say some jumbled thing like whatever that just was.

I’m still torn, but if I let myself be glass half full, this could be a huge moment in the history of design. Not to say we could have a Ray Gun situation on our hands, but it really could be a complete revisiting of communication in modern times, and that’s exciting.

fancy keys

ummm… Lady bug. Owl. Vampire. Elf.
‘nough said.

Chris Delorenzo’s picture keyboard. I would get it for bowie alone… too bad I need to see the keys to type.

Rachel Comey

December 14, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I LOVE these hiking inspired bags by Rachel Comey. How adorable is that green one? I spent part of ‘99 in Nepal and went to college in Colorado, so I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for all things mountain related. Plus, there’s something awesome about a bag that makes you want to hike Everest… in heels.

POSTER FRIDAY// andrio abero

December 11, 2009 · 1 Comment

Oh. My. God. two days in a row of posting. Alert the presses.

Last night I headed over to ADC to talk design and try to get in the holiday spirit (it was their annual holiday party.) Am I any more holiday inclined today? No, not really. Was I pleasantly surprised to be reminded of Andrio Abero? Yes! (Abero was an ADC Young Gun [4].)

Andrio Abero is a graphic designer and illustrator from Seattle, living and working in the Cobble Hill (Brooklyn!)

stuck on you

December 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I know this blog title is a little ridiculous given we’re talking about tape (stuck, tape, get it? Zing!) But oh well, who cares, if a girl can use tape to turn rooms into geometric wonderlands, I can use a pun.

The girl is Rebecca Ward. She hails from Austin, TX, and most recently did an installation for Kate Spade Tokyo.

POSTER FRIDAY// erik otto

November 20, 2009 · 1 Comment

I think it all started by David inviting me to grab dinner. Now, as I met David years ago by borrowing hot sauce at a taco stand, we usually go back to the same taco stand when we eat together… I was stuck at work and couldn’t go, but tacos have been on my mind ever since.

So, when I was on Print Society later I found myself really liking this Erik Otto print. I went to his site, and he’s from the mission. And there you have it—Tacos. One word and I’m missing SF.

So, yeah, Erik Otto of SF, you are my Poster Friday.

Speaking of, welcome home Laur!
